Norway’s famous crooked road, the Trollstigen, climbs a mountain in a series of 11 hairpin turns. Trollstigen translates as “Troll’s Footpath.” The long uphill drive is worth the time. The steep, narrow road includes a parking area overlooking the magnificent Stigfossen waterfall.

Located in Rauma, the road features a 9-percent incline. This unique road dates from 1936 and took eight years to construct. It’s been revised many times. During peak use, 2,500 vehicles per day travel the winding road up the mountain. Its well-maintained asphalt surface makes for a safe, smooth drive on a challenging road.
Repairs to reduce the risks of rockfalls have improved the road. Widening many of the sharp bends made it more comfortable to drive. The skill of the construction and maintenance on the road enhance this alpine tourist area. A new museum and more pullouts for taking photographs add to the area’s attractions for travelers.
