The humble road sign has undergone something of a renaissance in recent years. Today, road signs have become more popular as elements of not only our roads and highways, but also in street art. One town is on a mission to give new life to discarded road signs and as a result, the main drag in Meadville, PA boasts a 1200-foot long 3D mural made entirely out of street signs.

You probably wouldn’t expect that something as mundane and unattractive as a street sign could be made into such striking works of art, but the town’s Arts and Environment Initiative has brought the project to life in 2002. Not only is the mural over a quarter mile long, it also features wind- and solar-powered moving components. The project shows images inspired by the Allegheny Mountains, the French Creek watershed, roads, PennDOT (Pennsylvania Department of Transportation) workers, and local farms and forests. What began as a project to create a sense of identity in the community has become a local landmark and tourist attraction.
